The Safety over EtherCAT protocol (FSoE "FailSafe over EtherCAT") defines a safety communication layer for EtherCAT. FSoE meets the requirements of IEC 61508 SIL 3 and enables the transfer of safe and standard information on the same communication system without limitations with regard to transfer speed and cycle time.
In 2010, July 13th FSoE has gained IEC acceptance.
Using the EtherCAT Technology a lot of limitations of competitive Industrial Ethernet solutions can be overcome (this article is currently only available in German language).
