CAN network analysis seminar

One-day seminar on analysis of
CAN networks including practical presentations

To participate at the CAN Analysis Seminar, elementary knowledge, like taught in the CAN seminar, is required.

Due to its special performance features and cost-efficient implementation, CAN is ideally suited for networking of intelligent components in a large number of industrial and automotive applications. Today CAN is the dominant communication standard in automobiles and automotive systems of all kinds, as well as in embedded systems.

Target Group and Objectives
One key feature of CAN is the excellent communication safety, enabling reliable usage in a large number of applications. This is especially important for applications with tough environmental conditions.

The seminar provides an overview about possibilities and procedures for the successful analysis of CAN bus systems. This includes analysis of the communication level, e.g. for CAN device or network software development, as well as testing on physical level, e.g. for design and commissioning of CAN networks.
In addition, procedures for systematic and successful troubleshooting and elimination of existing distortion- and error-sources are explained in detail and presented using practical experiments.
Since the participants should have profound knowledge about the CAN technology, it is specially recommended to take part in the "CAN seminar", which takes place the day before.

Seminar times
8:30 - 17:30

Topics

1. The main causes of failures

Error rate; Possible causes of failures and effects on the communication network; Measurement tools, testing CAN busses and general error search

2. Analysis of the physical level

Determination and assessment of the used topology and physical network design; Testing and validation of the transmission media; Measurement and interpretation of the signal quality; Detection of external distortion sources

3. Analysis of communication level

Monitoring of the data communication; Error Frames; Content and meaning of bus statistics; CAN system stimulation

4. Testing on application level

Benefit of using higher layer protocols for error analysis; Linking communication data and bus statistics for detection of error causes; Network control

5. Extension of CAN busses and methods for error avoidance

Usage of topology components for the extension of CAN networks as well as for the protection against unfixable error causes and disturbances
